Holistic Saturdays: Vanilla and Chocolate Milkshakes. (V, GF)

Years ago, when I was raising my kids vegetarian, my parents had come for a visit. I gave my soul food loving father this vanilla smoothie to drink. He tried it. He looked at me and said, “I see my grandchildren are not suffering.” I found that comment hilarious. He drank the entire milkshake and asked for more.

Both of these shakes are long-standing recipes in my house. You know how you sometimes make the same thing over and over again? Not for a lack of imagination, but because it’s just that good. And this is super simple too.

Vanilla Milkshake

  • Three frozen peeled bananas
  • Two cups or more unsweetened vanilla or plain non-dairy milk – I use plain almond milk
  • Two packets stevia or two tablespoons agave
  • Cinnamon powder to taste
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract, less if you use vanilla non-dairy milk

For the chocolate milkshake, just add three tablespoons of chocolate powder to the vanilla recipe. I use Hershey’s Cocoa.

Blend all ingredients in a high speed blender.

Tip:

Keep frozen bananas in your freezer so you’re always ready to make a milkshake. I wait for them to get ripe, full of brown spots. Then I put them in my freezer whole and unpeeled. When I make a milkshake, I run the bananas under hot water to easily remove the skin.

You can also peel and chop them. Store peeled bananas in a freezer bag.

Using frozen bananas is the difference between a banana smoothie and a vanilla milkshake.

Let me know how you like them!

Mocha Angels 365. Day 38.

  • Bring a smile to someone else’s face.
  • Greet a stranger.
  • Secretly help someone in need.
  • Write a positive comment on YouTube, Twitter, Facebook, or Instagram (I’m writing about this soon.)
  • Surprise your partner with a home cooked meal.
  • Call your mom. If she’s not here anymore, talk to her anyway.
  • Share the music you listened to as a kid with your kids.
  • Bring light to a place where there is none.

Mocha Angels 365. Day 37.

“Our personal attempts to live humanely in this world are never wasted. Choosing to cultivate love rather than anger just might be what it takes to save the planet from extinction.”

– Pema Chodron, The Places That Scare You

I’m reading this book right now, and it is a stellar work. Chodron, an American Buddhist nun, most known for her bestseller When Things Fall Apart, gives clear instruction on how to open the heart (and keep it open) especially when we don’t want to do so. A review is coming soon. If you’ve read the book, or any of her books, let me know what you think.

Mocha Angels 365. Day 33.

“Lean not on your own understanding” means not to only trust what you perceive with your five senses. There is more to this planet than what you see, hear, feel, taste, and smell. Your understanding of life is increased by the gift from God: intuition.

This sixth sense is your Higher Power guiding you in the right direction. Intuition is always your first thought about a situation. The thought is usually quick and fleeting. Sometimes intuition is felt in your body, a la “I had a gut feeling about……”

Listening to your intuition is a skill to be cultivated in order for you to trust it. That’s why meditation or even quiet time with no media distractions is helpful. They both teach you to listen to your own inner wisdom.

Mantra: I trust my intuition today.

Mocha Angels 365. Day 29.

Lyric from “Everybody Have Fun Tonight” by Wang Chung. Written by Nick Feldman. Produced by Peter Wolf, Jack Hues, and Wang Chung. Released September 13, 1986. From the album “Mosaic.”

Can you tell I’m an 80’s kid? I loved that song when I was a kid. I was like, “What’s a Wang Chung?” Nobody cared because it was a Top 40 jam and it had a nice beat. (Which is what the kids always said on American Bandstand.)

Today’s post is inspired by music, specifically Soul Train. I was having a moment, not feeling too great. The YouTube algorithm magically sensed my need to feel better and up popped “The Best of Soul Train 1971-1979, Volume 6.” I didn’t even know Soul Train had a “best of” series.

Lenny Williams, Gladys Knight and the Pips, The Ohio Players, The O’Jays, Donna Summer, The Pointers Sisters, the Soul Train dancers, and commercials for Ultra Sheen?! Are you kidding? The music of my childhood? The clothes, the hair, the attitude! I was IN HEAVEN!! Life is GREAT! Mama was singing and dancing her butt off.

What’s today’s message? SING, DANCE, and HAVE FUN. Put on your favorite music and shake your booty!

If you have access to YouTube on your television, watch Soul Train on the telly. And watch volume 5 to see Ike and Tina Turner singing live. It was great to be an Ikette for a few minutes!
